Who is Romme Alpin Best For?
Romme Alpin is a great choice for families, but it may not suit everyone. Here’s a quick guide to see if it’s the right ski resort for you.
Romme Alpin is Perfect for:
β Families with young kids (2–10 years old): Safe beginner slopes, magic carpet lifts, and a playroom inside the lodge.
β Parents who want stress-free skiing: Ski-in, ski-out access means no long walks in ski boots!
β First-time skiers & beginners: Great ski school with English-speaking instructors.
β Families on a budget: While not the cheapest resort, it’s great value for what you get (free ski passes for kids under 6!).

Who Might Want to Look Elsewhere?
β Teenagers looking for nightlife: There’s no real après-ski scene for older kids.
β Advanced skiers wanting a large ski area: With 34 slopes, Romme is a great option but not as big as Åre or Sälen.
Why Romme Alpin is Perfect for Families
Easy Access from Stockholm
One of the biggest advantages of Romme Alpin is its location. It is only 2 hours and 30 minutes from Stockholm, which makes it easy to reach, even with young kids who are not fans of long car rides. The distance is just right for a smooth road trip. You can plan simple activities, sing along to favorite songs, and bring some snacks to keep everyone happy.
A Ski Resort Designed for Kids
Romme Alpin is an excellent choice for families, especially those introducing children to skiing.
- The beginner area has fun elements like tunnels and animal high-fives to keep kids entertained as they learn.
My kids had a blast here. Ollie loved zooming through the course, while Theo was more interested in eating snow at the bottom of the piste. He did try skiing a little bit, too!
- A magic carpet makes it easier for small children to get back up the slope without the challenge of using a ski lift.
- The ski school offers lessons in English, making it accessible to international visitors. Kids are placed in groups based on age and skill level, from complete beginners to more advanced skiers.

Ollie had a great time learning new techniques and especially enjoyed the final session, during which the children showed off their progress and received medals from Rommie, the resort’s mascot.
Family-Friendly Accommodations
Romme Alpin designs its rooms with families in mind. Each room has four small beds that you can rearrange to fit your needs and create the best setup for your family.
One of the most useful features is the drying closet, where you can hang wet ski clothes, gloves, and balaclavas to dry overnight, so everything feels warm and ready in the morning.
Kid-Friendly Dining
Both breakfast and dinner include a special kids’ buffet, making mealtime easy for families. There is always something suitable for children, and the buffet setup lets them pick their favorites.
One of the things we loved most was the small playroom inside the dining hall. As soon as the kids finished eating, they could run off to play while the adults enjoyed their meal at a more relaxed pace.
Activities and Experiences
For Kids
Romme Alpin offers plenty of activities to entertain children on and off the slopes.
Ski School for All Levels
The ski school at Romme Alpin is well-organized, with lessons divided by age and skill level. Ollie had a fantastic time and learned many new skills.

The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and great with kids. Private lessons are also available for both children and adults, and you can book them in English if needed.
Après-Ski Fun
The fun doesn’t stop when the slopes close! There are several family-friendly activities to enjoy:
- Indoor Playroom: Located on the first floor of the lodge, this large playroom is perfect for younger kids. It opens in the afternoon and has plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained.
- Ping-Pong Tables: Older kids (and even parents!) can enjoy some friendly competition at the two ping-pong tables.
- Movie Nights: Each evening, three different movies are shown at various times. The daily movie and activity schedule is posted each morning at the dining hall entrance.
- Rommi Cupen Mini Competition: Every Tuesday at 14:00, kids can race in Lisas Hage and compete in a fun ski event with Rommi. A great way to encourage young skiers to show off their skills!
- Kids’ Afterski: Every Monday and Friday at 16:00, kids can dance and sing with Rommi outside the Ski Lodge in the Beginners Area. It’s the perfect way to end a fun day on the slopes!
- Rommis Waffle Party: On select afternoons, kids can enjoy a fun waffle-making activity at the lodge. This needs to be booked in advance.
- Ghost Walks: A special spooky evening adventure is available for kids aged 4-9, where they explore the area with a guide.

For Parents
While Romme Alpin is fantastic for kids, parents can also enjoy great skiing and a bit of relaxation.
Skiing for All Levels
The resort has well-maintained slopes for all skill levels. There are dedicated areas for new skiers, fun slopes with jumps and turns, and challenging black runs for those looking for an adrenaline rush.
The ski-in, ski-out access makes it easy to hit the slopes whenever you want.
Relaxation and Cozy Spaces
- Spa & Massage: If you need a break from skiing, Romme offers on-site massage treatments at the lodge. These need to be booked in advance.
For the Whole Family
Fondue Night at Toppstugan
This was one of the highlights of our trip! The kids loved the adventure of taking a snow truck up the mountain, and the food was excellent.

The cozy atmosphere and interactive dining experience made it a perfect family-friendly activity. If your budget allows, I highly recommend booking this experience in advance.
How Many Days Do You Need at Romme Alpin?
Not sure how long to book your stay? Here’s what we recommend based on our experience:
- 1–2 nights: Perfect for a quick weekend getaway or first-time skiing experience with young kids.
- 3–4 nights: The ideal balance! Long enough to enjoy skiing, après-ski activities, and a special fondue dinner, but not so long that kids get overtired.
- 5+ nights: Best for families who want a more relaxed pace or plan to do longer ski lessons.
π‘ Our Experience: We stayed for 4 nights, which felt just right! It gave us time to ski, relax, and enjoy all the activities without feeling rushed.
Where to Stay: Accommodation at Romme Alpin
The Ski Lodge: The Most Convenient Option for Families
If you want the most comfortable and hassle-free stay at Romme Alpin, the Ski Lodge is the best option. Staying here means you can ski in and ski out with ease, store your gear conveniently, and enjoy exclusive lodge amenities that make the experience more relaxing for families.
Types of Rooms
The Ski Lodge offers different room types, but for families, the best choice is the:
β Family Room (4 beds) – A cozy and functional space with four movable single beds, allowing you to customize your sleeping arrangements. The room also includes a drying closet, which is essential for drying wet ski clothes overnight. (This was a lifesaver for us!)
β Larger Duplex Cabins – If you are traveling with a bigger family or a group, these offer separate sleeping areas and more storage space.
Advantages of Staying at the Ski Lodge
One of the biggest advantages of booking a room at the Ski Lodge is the exclusive access to additional activities and facilities that make the trip even better for families.
β Kids’ Playroom & Movie Nights – Lodge guests have access to an indoor playroom filled with toys and games for younger children. Three different movies are shown each night, perfect for winding down after skiing.
β Ping-Pong Tables – A fun spot for older kids, teens, and even parents.
β Sauna & Relaxation Area – After a long day on the slopes, adults can unwind in the on-site sauna, available exclusively for Ski Lodge guests. (We didn’t get to try it this time, but it’s a great option for parents looking to relax!)
β Convenient Dining Options – If you stay at the lodge, you can book half-board meals (breakfast and dinner) at the Lodge Restaurant, making mealtimes simple and stress-free.
β Ski Storage & Quick Access to the Slopes – Each room comes with a personal ski locker, so you don’t have to carry equipment far. The lodge is right next to the slopes, making it easy to get on and off the mountain.

Is It Worth Staying at the Ski Lodge?
For families with young children, yes! The convenience of having ski-in, ski-out access, included entertainment for kids, and easy dining makes it a stress-free option. While you could stay offsite, you would miss out on the added amenities that make Romme Alpin feel like a full vacation experience.
If you plan to visit Romme Alpin, I highly recommend booking early, as rooms tend to sell out—especially during peak weeks like Sportlov (winter break).
What to Pack for Romme Alpin with Kids
Packing for a ski trip with kids can be overwhelming, but dressing them in the right layers makes all the difference in keeping them warm, dry, and comfortable.
Clothing Layers for Kids
1st Layer: Base Layer (Moisture-Wicking & Warmth)
- Merino wool base layer (top & bottom) – the best material for keeping moisture away from the skin.
- Merino wool ski socks – fit is key! Make sure socks are pulled up flat without wrinkles to avoid discomfort in ski boots.
2nd Layer: Insulating Layer
- Warm, cozy mid-layer (fleece or wool sweater).
- Zip-up vest with a back protector (optional, but recommended for extra safety).
- Neck scarf or thin balaclava – A must-have! Put this on before the helmet and goggles so it stays in place. Before clipping the helmet, make sure the scarf covers the cheeks and nose to protect from cold wind.

3rd Layer: Ski Suit & Accessories
- Waterproof & insulated ski suit (or jacket + pants).
- Helmet & goggles (goggles should fit securely over the helmet).
- Insulated, waterproof gloves (mittens are often warmer for younger kids).
- Ski boots & skis (rent or bring your own).
π‘ Pro Tip: Label everything! Ski gear often looks the same, and kids can easily mix up gloves, goggles, or helmets with others in ski school.
Other Essentials to Pack
π² Hand warmers & extra gloves – Kids’ hands get cold quickly! Always pack a spare dry pair.
π² A small sled – If your kids get tired of skiing, they can have fun near the beginner area.
π² Entertainment for the drive – The 2.5-hour trip is short, but bringing music, audiobooks, or simple games makes it easier.
π‘ Pro Tip: If youβre staying at the Ski Lodge, no need to bring extra towels or bed sheets—they provide everything you need!
Practical Tips for Visiting Romme Alpin
Best Times to Visit
We have visited Romme Alpin many times, both with and without kids. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends, but some weekends, especially in March, can still be a great time to visit.
I would not recommend coming during Sportlov (Swedish winter break). We tried it once; it was the busiest I have ever seen at the resort. We spent more time standing in line than actually skiing. That said, if your kids are in school, this might be the only option. I will probably be back during Sportlov next year, too!
This year, we visited on a weekday during the second week of January, and it was terrific. There were no crowds, and prices were much lower than during peak season. The only downside is that the slopes close at 3:00 p.m. instead of 4:00 p.m., but overall, it was worth it.
Booking Tips for the Best Deals
- Book early! We got excellent deals by booking in October. Prices are always higher during peak weeks like Sportlov, so try to plan your trip outside of the school holidays.
- Ski Pass Savings: There are many options available depending on your needs.
- If you plan to ski only in the beginner area, consider getting a special ski pass for that zone instead of a full-price pass.
- If you are taking turns watching the kids, you can share one complete ski pass while the other parent sticks to the beginner area.
- Children under six ski for free! More details here: Romme Alpin Ski Pass.

Renting Ski Equipment
If you don’t have your own gear, Romme Alpin has a well-equipped rental shop with skis, snowboards, helmets, and boots for all ages.
- Book Online in Advance: This saves time at check-in and ensures availability, especially during peak season. You can pre-book up to two days before arrival.
- Flexible Rental Options: You can rent for a single day or multiple days and swap between skis and snowboards if you want to try both.
- Kid-Friendly Rentals: They offer smaller skis and boots for young children, making it easy to find the right fit.
- Rental Shop Hours: Open daily from 8:00 AM. Check on their website to see their open hours.
- Storage Tip: If youβre staying at the Ski Lodge, each room has a locker for ski storage, so you donβt have to carry equipment back and forth.
Transportation Options
Driving to Romme Alpin
Driving is the easiest and most flexible option if you have a car. The roads are well-maintained, and free parking is available at the resort.

Taking the Ski Bus
The Romme Alpin Ski Bus is a convenient and eco-friendly alternative if you prefer not to drive. It departs from multiple locations in Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerås, and other cities.
- Book Early: Tickets often sell out, especially on weekends and holidays. Reservations must be made online in advance.
- Direct to the Slopes: The bus takes you straight to the ski resort, so there is no need to worry about parking or long walks with ski gear.
- Ski Pass is included with Your Ticket: If you book a Ski Bus + SkiPass package, your ski pass is included in the price. This can be a great deal compared to buying separately.
- Comfortable Ride: Buses are modern and cozy, with onboard restrooms on longer routes.
Budgeting for Your Trip
Estimated Costs
Here’s a breakdown of typical costs for a 4-night family trip at Romme Alpin (Prices of January 2025):
Accommodation
- Family Room (4 beds, slope view, breakfast included): 5,495 SEK (Sunday–Thursday stay)

Lift Tickets & Ski Passes
There are several options depending on your family’s needs:
- 1-Day Ski Pass:
- Adult: 480 SEK
- Youth (7-17 years): 375 SEK
- Beginner area pass: 220 SEK
- 5-Day Ski Pass:
- Adult: 1,990 SEK
- Youth (7-17 years): 1,555 SEK
- Children 6 and under ski for free
π‘ Our Choice: Instead of getting the complete Romme Package, we bought only one complete ski pass and one beginner pass since our kids are still small and do not go up the mountain. My husband and I took turns skiing, which worked well for us. The Romme Package might be a better deal when the kids are older.
Dining Expenses
- Buffet Dinner at the Lodge Restaurant:
- Adult: 340 SEK
- Youth: 210 SEK
- Child: 110 SEK
- Fondue Dinner at Toppstugan (optional upgrade): Expensive but worth it! For more details, see Fondue Dinner.
π‘ Our Experience: We upgraded one night for the Fondue Dinner at Toppstugan, which was one of our tripβs highlights. The ride up the mountain in a cool snow truck was a fun adventure for the kids, and the food was excellent. If your budget allows, I highly recommend trying it!

Lunch Options
Romme Alpin has several places to eat during the day, whether you want a warm sit-down meal, a quick bite, or a budget-friendly picnic.
Wärdshuset Restaurant
A classic ski resort restaurant offering hot meals, soups, and a salad bar. It’s a great option for families looking for a sit-down lunch without leaving the slopes.
π Near the main lodge
Hamburgeriet
Perfect for families looking for fast food. Serves burgers, fries, and drinks, making it a quick and easy choice when you don’t want to waste time off the slopes.
π Close to the main slopes, next to Wärdshuset Restaurant
Våffelstugan (Waffle House)
A must-visit if you love sweet or savory waffles. It’s a fun lunch or snack stop, especially if you want a warm treat between ski runs.
π At the top of the Romme Nord lift
Café at Gästservice
If you’re looking for lighter options, this café serves sandwiches, pastries, hot drinks, and quick snacks. It’s a great place to warm up and grab a fika.
π Gästservice (Guest Service) area
The Outdoor Grill
One of the most budget-friendly options. Bring your own hot dogs or other BBQ items and grill them yourself at the designated BBQ stations in the beginner area.
π Location: Near the beginner slopes
Tips for Saving Money
- Book early for the best deals. We booked in October and got great prices. High season, especially during Sportlov, is always expensive, so try to visit outside peak weeks if possible.
- Consider ski pass options carefully. If you have small children who won’t ski much, buying one complete ski pass and one beginner pass may be cheaper than a complete package.
- Pack snacks and drinks. While dining options are great, bringing fruit, granola bars, and extra snacks that your family likes can help keep costs down and keep little ones happy between meals.
- Use the free BBQ areas. If you bring hot dogs, you can have a fun and budget-friendly lunch in the beginner area.
Was It Worth the Price?
Absolutely! While not the cheapest ski resort, Romme Alpin offers incredible value for what you get:
β Ski-in, ski-out convenience.
β Well-organized ski storage near the slopes.
β Outstanding balance between price and comfort.
Romme Alpin is a fantastic choice for families looking for an affordable yet comfortable ski experience.
Is Romme Alpin Worth It for Families?
Romme Alpin exceeded our expectations as a family-friendly ski resort. The short drive from Stockholm, easy beginner slopes, and kid-friendly lodge amenities made it a stress-free experience for us. While it’s not the biggest ski resort, the ski-in, ski-out access, affordability, and fantastic service make it a great choice for families with young children.
Would we go again? Absolutely! We’ll be back when the kids are older, and I’d highly recommend it for any family looking for an easy, fun, and budget-friendly ski holiday.
